MILWAUKEE -- A recent barrage of car break-ins in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood has neighbors thinking twice about leaving cars unlocked and items visible inside the vehicle.
“I’ve seen a bunch of windows broken from cars," Barbara Federlin said.
“I think there’s some people who are desperate, and this is their way of looking for a way of survival," she continued.
Babara Federlin has lived on North Weil Street in the Riverwest Neighborhood for about 15 years. Her neighbor's car was broken into overnight.
“This is a good neighborhood, I don’t want people getting scared to live here," Federlin said.
"I think that will happen [if this continues], and I think that’s really bad," she said.
Federlin is not the only one in the neighborhood concerned. Just a few blocks over on Fratney Street, Jeanette Sulewski stresses a need to stay vigilant.
“Don’t leave anything in your car, even if it’s just an envelope," Sulewski said.
"Even an empty can of soda, you never know what they’re going to be looking for," she warned.
For more than four decades, Sulewski has called the Riverwest Neighborhood home. And even with the burden of future car break-ins, she said moving out of Riverwest isn't even an option.
“I’ve lived here too long, and I won’t move out of the neighborhood because I love this neighborhood," Sulewski.
Milwaukee Police confirm reports of at least two car break-ins between the 33000 and 34000 block of North Weil Street overnight; neighbors said there have been many more.
